Kivalina damages case dismissed (Kivalina v ExxonMobil) (30 September 2009)
On 30 September 2009, Kivalina v ExxonMobil was dismissed by the United States District Court for the Northern District of California Oakland Division on the basis that the case presents a political question and that the village lacks standing. This case was filed in 2008 on behalf of an Inupiat Eskimo village in Alaska that must be relocated due to global warming. They are seeking millions of dollars in damages from oil, coal and utility company defendants due to their contributions to global warming.
